What NOT to wear:

Cotton t-shirts, especially graphic T's are not appropriate for the workplace, no matter how funny they are.

Do not wear tank tops - if you are wearing a wifebeater it should be UNDER your professional shirt. Also, be sure to cover all tattoos while in school.

As a student teacher, you should dress as a teacher, not as a student. Sweatshirts are not professional, and are therefore not appropriate to wear as a student teacher.

Do not wear shirts that show off your hairy chest. The best a approach is to dress conservatively.

What you should wear:

Suits are sure to make you stand out as a teacher. If you get hot, it is easy to take off the jacket and just wear the shirt and tie.

Polo shirts are acceptable in most schools. As long as they are not too tight and they are more dressy than casual, polo shirts can be a really nice look on male teachers.

Be sure to always dress in layers. Most schools have temperature variences throughout the day. You may get cold and need a sweater during your free period, and then start sweating while you teach and have to take it off. Be sure to always be prepared - layering sweaters with button down shirts are a great way to achieve this goal.

Sweater vests are very attractive and are a staple in most male teacher's wardrobes.

Button down shirts are a must. They can be worn in combination with any number of outfits such as suit jackets, sweaters, or alone with a tie. Having a variety of colors and patterns will be very helpful.

Be sure to have ties that match or compliment your shirts. Ties can turn a regular outfit into a very professional, polished look.
